Wayne State University: Henry Ford TechOne Labs

TechTown, the city of Detroit’s premier address for high-tech ventures, offers tenants affordable, state-of-the-art work spaces in a convenient location. TechOne, the entrepreneurial community’s first business incubator facility, is at the heart of this 12-block research and technology park located within the Wayne State University campus near New Center. TechOne, an Albert Kahn building, initially served as a service department for Pontiac with ramps for vehicles. Then it became Chevrolet’s Creative Service building where the Corvette was designed, as well as the car manufacturer’s auto show displays.

The first phase of work involved the renovation of the building’s core and shell. Subsequent architectural services and interior design for tenant build-out services included: tenant/owner communication coordination, space planning, tenant specification standards, coordination of construction work, scheduling, permitting, budgeting, and subconsultant quality coordination for clients such as Henry Ford Health Systems, Michigan Neonatal Biobank, Asterand and Shrader Laboratories. Henry Ford Health Systems, a Michigan nonprofit and leading national health care provider, moved four research laboratories into approximately 15,000 square feet of space on the fourth floor of the TechOne building. The new lab spaces conduct cutting-edge research for various health system departments including: DNA, Cytogenetics, and Drug Discovery. Working with Wayne State, Henry Ford Health Systems and the construction manager, our team completed design through construction of the space in five months.
