University of Michigan Crisler Center

Hamilton Anderson served as landscape architect for the expansion of the University of Michigan's Crisler Center, the university's home for athletic events for nearly five decades. HAA provided landscape design and space programming for a roof garden and the main entrance plaza, working as part of a larger design team in helping to realize the University of Michigan former athletic director Dave Brandon's vision.

Extensive seat walls are artfully integrated with landscape plantings to accommodate fans waiting to meet friends. Universal accessibility is achieved by utilizing planters and bollards for curbing. Permeable paving meets stringent City of Ann Arbor requirements for storm water management.

The service area, circulation and parking changes also were addressed as part of the site improvements. A vegetated roof plaza provides event space overlooking the alumni parking lot, which is known as the place to be on game day.
