The existing site posed considerable challenges; it had been filled with construction debris and broken paving ranging from 6 to 16 feet deep. It was paved over and used as a staging area for automobiles from a nearby factory. The design team assessed environmental conditions and integrated Ford Motor Land Development Corporation’s remediation recommendations into the redevelopment program. This recycled site now boasts a 210,000 SF plant that assembles chassis for motor homes. The Construction Association of Michigan (CAM) Magazine described the effort as a phoenix rising from the rubble to give over 100 employees a chance to restore the economy of Detroit’s urban core.
