Oak Park Strategic Economic Development Plan

Like many suburban, auto-oriented communities developed in the mid-20th century, changing suburban markets make a strategic economic development plan critical for Oak Park’s future. HAA partnered with Cibbs Planning Group (GPG) to work with the Oak Park community to analyze conditions, explore solutions with community stakeholders, and create strategies that built a detailed road map for implementation of a strategic economic development plan for the city. The process inevitably compels people and businesses to look at the community’s commercial areas with a new perspective.

The plan is specific to the people and physical characteristics of the commercial study areas and the Oak Park community, and it offers a detailed and innovative approach to economic development."

The team compiled market data, demographic information, spatial data, field observations, input from community members and stakeholders, and best practices from peer communities. Based on this research and extensive coordination with city leadership, HAA and GPG developed city-wide and place-specific recommendations that reflect Oak Park’s economic potential.

The final chapter on Implementation outlines the necessary key actions, task leaders, and anticipated time lines to serve as a useful tool for city leaders to turn strategies into real improvements.
