Wayne State University School of Social Work

The Wayne State University School of Social Work’s mission is to transmit, develop, critically examine and apply knowledge to advance social work practice and social welfare policy in order to promote social, cultural and economic justice for the betterment of poor vulnerable and oppressed individuals and groups of people. HAA worked with the university to facilitate these values through converting an existing day care facility into a new home for the department. The new transformed space accommodates staff offices, classrooms, a computer lab, and amenity spaces for its users. "

The existing building has great architectural elements, which HAA drew design inspiration from.

The building’s central courtyard and use of light and color were key factors that drove the interiors color palette and layout. Where possible, new offices have access to natural light. For other offices, it was important to have visual connection to the public corridors via glass doors or side lites.

The majority of the main public corridors look into the existing central courtyard, which in turn helps natural light penetrate to adjacent spaces. Along the corridors, users can also use the designed built-in seating for break out conversations and/or laptop connections. HAA chose bright and natural colors to help convey a sense of freshness and calm throughout the new space.

The design successfully transformed the building into a dynamic learning space with natural light and new amenities
