Solanus Casey Center Master Plan

The Solanus Casey Center Master Plan is a transformative approach to neighborhood stabilization. Located on the east side of Detroit, the Center is an international destination which strives to be a place of pilgrimage, healing, reconciliation and peace. What began as a modest parking study by HAA grew into holistic community-centric reactivation of the Mt. Elliott neighborhood, an area heavily impacted by Detroit’s economic struggles. HAA worked closely with key stakeholders to extend the Center’s programming into the surrounding landscape, resulting in a neighborhood master plan that provides spaces for reflection, community gardening, recreation, and outdoor worship.

The master plan transcends the limits of the Center to transform vacant properties into productive landscapes. "

Currently in the schematic design phase, the master plan transcends the limits of the Center to transform vacant properties into productive landscapes. The plan proposes a formal connection between a future greenway and the central campus, incorporating native plantings and stormwater management. It also includes a contemporary building addition and outdoor courtyards for contemplation and worship.

The Center acquired a large number of publicly-owned properties in the neighborhood throughout the design process. A key objective for the design team was to respect and empower current residents, and one way the team accomplished this was by responding to acquisitions in real time to satisfy resident needs.
